Love how James meets the twins for the first time.

When you open your eyes to get up, the colonel has already left. She must have hit you really hard, because you are seeing double. A woman holds out her hand to help you up, only you’re seeing two. Wait, there are two identical women here after all. One of them smiles, the other rolls her eyes.

“Yes, identical twins,” she says, “I’m Hinata, this is my sister Jun. You’re James Bread, aren’t you?”

Later, Jaap tells you they are captains in the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. They usually don’t talk that much, so you must have done something right. That makes you smile. Asian twins just transferred from Austin Powers’ bucket list to yours.

You decide then and there that you will let nothing happen to Valentinia of Benlis, Imperial Librarian. Admiring, wide open eyes look into yours. Warm, soft, hungry lips find yours. Then they stop. Valentinia recoils and jumps up.

“Oh… I didn’t mean… Please forgive me, Junker Lintham.”

“No need. It was nothing…”

“How can you be so heartless!”

“Heartless? I think I just forgave you…”

“How can a kiss be nothing to you?”

“You just said you didn’t mean to kiss me.”

“I know what I said. I didn’t mean to kiss you. But you said it didn’t mean anything. That is completely different.”

“So, the kiss did mean something? To you? To me?”

“Why must you be so insufferable? You are always playing your nobility games with me.”

“Alright. Let’s go back to the beginning. Did you mean to kiss me?”

“No, I most certainly did not. What do you take me for?”

“Did the kiss mean something to you?”

“Of course! How can you even ask!”

“Well, what did it mean?”

“What do kisses usually mean, Junker Lintham?”

“That you like me?”

Valentinia stamps her foot.

“Not anymore!”

I love how she meets Finch for the first time:

“Watch where you’re going! Bloody civilians think they own the streets.”

Finch is pushed aside, after leaving the Ministry of Interior Telegraph Directorate, and almost bumping into a Russian Imperial Army officer. He turns to watch her climb the steps, admiring her curvy, muscular, broad-shouldered frame.

“If you’re looking at my ass, vyrodok, I’ll punch you in the face.”

“What if I let you look at my ass as well? Then we can both be perverts.”

Turning, the military woman looks down on Finch. She takes in his fine clothes. It’s his honest, boyish face with blue eyes that throws her. She can’t help but laugh when he turns around, lifts his coat, and shakes his bum. Her smile drops just as quickly when he walks away without looking back.

“Hey, vyrodok, don’t you want to watch me shake mine?”
