Chryseis awakens with the grace of one merely rousing from a pleasant dream. Her eyes open first, finding Poole’s face above her. Something in his expression—that earnest devotion to science, that burning need to unlock mysteries—reminds her instantly of Seuthes. The same fevered intensity, the same scholarly passion barely masking deeper desires. Despite her centuries of experience (or perhaps because of them), she had trusted Seuthes when he promised someone would eventually find and revive her. Now, looking at Poole’s enraptured face, she knows she was right to wait. She’s handled men like this before, men who mistake scholarly obsession for love. Her lips curve in a smile that’s worked since ancient times.

Chryseis also notices Madleen. The scholar’s practical attire and intelligent eyes suggest both competence and competition.
